A Critical Evaluation Of 1st Place Winner “African Field of Dreams”

Travel writing experts from the Society of American Travel Writers served as judges for the 2009 Family Travel Forum Teen Travel Writing Scholarship and picked the final winners.  Emily Mulder’s essay “African Field of Dreams” -- First Place Winner among more than 8,000 entries -- earned their respect and praise.

This is what some of these esteemed judges had to say about Emily's  work. The travelBIGO team looks forward to hearing if you find their comments helpful in your own work.

From Michael Verdon, Editor, Boating World Magazine:

“Hi Emily—this was pretty much the unanimous choice among the judges for first place…  What I liked was that it was first a story with a beginning, middle and end. But I thought your descriptions were also excellent and the way you interweaved the characters with the landscape was also very professional. It could’ve been an overly sentimental piece but I think it worked because you kept to the facts, and your natural enthusiasm boiled over.  Great job on it, and good luck.”

From Annette Thompson, Associate Travel Editor, Southern Living:

“I like the way you move from the universal experience to the personal such as in ‘Then we heard the rolls of thunder coming across the mountains and I felt a single raindrop on the back of my hand.’”
