Roughing It

My family and I go to Puerto Rico, which is located in the Caribbean, once a year for a one to two week vacation. Most people view a 'vacation' the way my mother and sister see it, a chance to relax and get a way from the relentlessly moving world. Well, my father and I have a different twist on what a vacation is to us.
Last year we got to on our own because my sister had a lot going on in school and my mom was working in child development. So the first thing two guys who are commercial fishermen and who like to rough it anyway, is change the tickets to a cheaper red eye flight and save the extra dough for a longer stay. My dad has a friend who hooked us up with a place for free, so now all we had to do is rent a car and buy food.
It was just one day in when we spotted a car on the side of the road for $200, we were paying that much for this rental car for two days, so we bought the car which I drove and he took the rental back and retrieved all of the money that was left. We decided though that after this trip this chowder wagon, which we fondly called it because of its appearance to a chowder clam, would be sold to a scrap yard. In further efforts to save money we bought only cheap white bread, peanut butter, and orange juice.
That menu served as our breakfast, lunch and dinner. So far the waves had been killer, our schedule was wake up at 6:00, go surfing until about 11:30, go back to eat and rest until 2:00 and then go back and surf until about a half-hour after sunset and then go to bed. You wan to talk about being crispy with sunburn and having all the energy sucked from your system, just do what we did.
There was no regret though, my father and I would rather be dead tired from over surfing than sit down at the beach or going sight seeing, those activities are for when my mother and sister are around.
Puerto Rico was really easy to get around in because it seemed like one out of every three people could speak some rough English. Because of our money conservation effort we left Puerto Rico two weeks later than we planned a still came back with money in our pockets.
That was an epic trip for my father and I, it was our true vacation style. The more you want to rough it and use common sense, the longer you can stay and beat your self up surfing twelve hours a day.
The most important thing was that we made our trip into what suited our style.
